Unique Local Culture:

    In September 1982, the State Council authorized the establishment of China’s first national forest park—Zhangjiajie Forest Park; in December 1992, Wulingyuan was designated by UNESCO on the World Heritage List as a natural heritage site; and in March 2001, it was designated by the Ministry of National Land Resources as a national geological park.
    The three natural reserves of Suoxi Valley, Tianzi Mountain and Yangjiajie form Wulingyuan and are the core scenic areas of Zhangjiajie. Within the area of Wulingyuan, there is the well-developed karst landform and even rare in the world is the formation of quartzite sandstone, peak forest and valley landforms both domestic and foreign experts and scholars admire Wulingyuan as the “natural labyrinth” and the incredible “memorial of the earth”. Besides the core scenic area of Wulingyuan, in the Wulingyuan District are “China’s best cave”—Huanglong Cave, the “worldly jade pool”—Baofeng Lake, and the national canoe slalom base; and in Cili County are Jiangya Hotspring, Wanfu Hotspring, Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, “small Three Gorges”—Loushui Drift and the Wulei Mountain, a Taoist holy place, which is dubbed as “South Wudang Mountain”. The US Hollywood moviemakers have ever got to Zhangjiajie to take photos of its scenery and these photos were chosen by Director Cameron and used in the movie “Avatar”.
    Famous local products and handicrafts include: Cili Eucommia ulmoides, Jinxiang pomelo, Wulingyuan stone bacteria, Chinese gooseberry, Miao Ridge bamboo utensils and Tujia minority brocades.
    Main Scenic Spots: Huangshi Fort (The “South Pillar of Heaven” is the badge and symbol of “Zhangjiajie International Forest Conservation Festival”). The Jinbian (Golden Whip) Stream is admirably described as “flowing ceaselessly even with one thousand years of drought and keeping clean even with ten thousand years of continuous rain”. The Tianzi (Emperor) Mountain is mysterious and tranquil with steep cliffs and has four wonders, namely, peak forest, sunrise, cloud waterfall and winter snow. The Huanglong Cave is admirably dubbed as “China’s magical cave and the world’s karst wonder” and the “treasury for speleological research”.
