As the third largest fresh water lake, the Dongting Lake is connected with the Yangtze River to the north and only next to the Qinghai Lake and the Poyang Lake. The area of the Dongting Lake has always been called the “land of fish and rice’. In his poem Facing the Dongting Lake, Meng Haoran wrote such famous verses as “Steam rises from the Yunmeng Lake and its waves shake the City of Yueyang”. The Han Dynasty tombs and the relics of the primitive society left on the Daochi Mountain and the Minglang Mountain standing in the lake show the long human civilization of the Dongting Lake area; and particularly, the discovery of the “big three-edge sharp utensil of gravel” has extended the human civilization here back to 100, 000 years ago. Near the urban areas, there are the Yanzhi and Houjiang Lakes covering an area of 186,000 square kilometers. On their shores and islets grow angelicas and orchids, the fishes swim in the clear water and the scenery here differs in different seasons and different kinds of weather.
